Aluminum In Your Natural Deodorant? You Might Be Surprised!

Finding a natural deodorant isn’t easy these days, in spite of the myriad of  “”Natural Deodorants.”  Why you might ask?  Because of a slick little secret the Big Natural Deodorants (We’ll call these the “Tom’s of Maine Type” ) doesn’t want you to know.  Untitled design(5).jpgMany of these companies use Potassium Alum, (that little spice bottle that hides in your cupboard until pickling time each year).

Potassium Alum is actually short for Ammonium aluminum sulfate, and are “naturally occurring mineral salts”; or naturally occurring aluminum.  This type of aluminum is what we are exploring today.

What is the difference in aluminum used in standard store bought deodorants, and Natural Deodorants?  alum

It comes down to particle size. The first two usually found in regular store-bought anti-antiperspirants are Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Aluminum Zirconium.  These are synthetic, and what most of us try to avoid when we make the switch to Natural Deodorants.   So, why are they dangerous?

These aluminums have very small molecular structures, and the concern is that it will penetrate the skin, your body’s largest organ, and can be a potential hazard as it is absorbed through it’s pores.  More dangerous yet, we are placing that entrance point of deodorant near the very heart of your body’s lymph nIMG_5386 (2)odes, under the arm.

When anything is adsorbed by the skin, it bypasses the your body’s immune system, and heads straight in, depositing itself in various places throughout.  The potential for it ending up in your lymph nodes, brain, or kidneys is prime.

The American Cancer Society says, ”

These substances [among which are aluminum] are said to be deposited in the lymph nodes under the arm, which are not able to get rid of them by sweating because the antiperspirant keeps you from perspiring. This causes a high concentration of toxins, which leads to cells mutating into cancer.

Most breast cancers develop in the upper outer quadrant of the breast because that area is closest to the lymph nodes exposed to antiperspirants.

So we come to “Natural” Potassium Alum, whose particles are significantly larger, in fact, they are too large to be absorbed by the skin…problem solved, right?

Sure…right up until you start sweating.

When alum is in its solid crystal form, these large molecules create a crystallineAlumCrystal structure, that is unlikely to penetrate your skin, however, when exposed to water, or you start perspiring, these large molecules break down into individual ions (atoms that are charged with a positive or negative charge) and become aluminum ions-the smallest possible form of aluminum to penetrate your skin!

This type of aluminum accumulates within the body so that these particles become more destructive every single year.  Anyone who thinks that using a natural crystal Alum deodorant, or that Potassium Alum will eliminate aluminum may be kidding themselves.  It’s that simple.

Read your labels, do your research and find out for yourself, what the best brands available are. It’s always eye opening, and good for body and soul.
